Icelandic Foals Born At The Homestead
Each year the mares of the herd drop one or two foals that are sold in the late fall. The foals are flown out to Talkeetna, Alaska where a waiting horse trailer whisks them to their new home. These little horses add a magic element to the overall experience of a vacation at the homestead. They are usually very friendly and always very cute. After a few weeks the foals will often join us on trail rides and pack trips adding a special feeling to these wilderness excursions. There is nothing like watching a foal romp along through fields of flowers in the Alaskan Wilderness while on a pack trip or trail ride.
These Icelandic foals are usually born unattended on the mountainside above treeline over 3000′. They grow up in a wild landscape protected by a functioning herd including stallions, regular human socialization and canine friends. They learn all about the bogs, brush, mountains, wildlife and rivers of the Alaskan landscape. The result is a Alaska-proof horse that has encountered bears, moose, caribou, wolves and other critters on their open range in the foothills of the Alaska Range. The mountainous terrain that they grow up in gives them a fine build and balance on steep ground, making these Icelandic foals ideal for packing and hunting. The foals are also well adapted to extreme cold of Interior Alaska, in fact all of the foals born on the homestead have sported thicker coats than their parents.
